With an average readership of 59 million people a month in the United States alone, the Huffington Post featured Mercado Global's innovative model for poverty on the front page of their social entrepreneurship section Top Social Entrepreneurs Saving the World.

While DeGolia says she never intended to start a social enterprise or nonprofit, she followed her instincts and in 2004 Mercado Global was established as a fair trade business.

"We didn't come from corporate America; we were thinking outside the box because we didn't even know where the box was," DeGolia admits.
