INTERNSHIPS OPPORTUNITIES

Production & Design Intern

Classification: Full‐time

Location: Panajachel, Guatemala

Position Description:

Reporting to the Guatemala Operations Manager, the P&O Intern will be based in our office in Panajachel, Guatemala. The Production & Operations Intern will gain valuable experience in production processes, textiles and logistics, as well as broad exposure to both the social enterprise and fashion industries. This position requires at least a 3-month commitment, though we are seeking an intern to stay for the semester. Start date will be in August/September. Unpaid but academic credit is available if intern is a current student.

Responsibilities:

  • Create a fabric catalog/inventory
  • Update the materials/accessories inventory
  • Assist with preparation of price sheets
  • Assist the Production team with shipments
  • Take pictures of swatches
  • Propose ideas to improve production processes
  • Perform other related duties as required

Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both English and Spanish
  • Current or recent college graduate from an accredited four-year institution, graduate students also welcome
  • Ability to exhibit professionalism, tact, and diplomacy in a confidential environment
  • Interest in MG's work
  • Demonstrated interest in non-profit development and international work

Press Intern

Position Overview

Classification: Full‐time

Location: Brooklyn, NY

Mercado Global is seeking a self-motivated, driven intern to be part of their Press Team. You will be communicating with the Marketing team as well as our Creative Director on a number of different tasks that will broaden your knowledge and skill set in the PR industry. Mainly focusing on keeping track of the PR Calendar and upcoming press pitches, you’ll be making sure that everything is sent out when scheduled. You will also be working with our SalesForce to create and send pitches to appropriate clients, as well as helping out with event planning for MG benefits.

This position requires at least a 3-month commitment and will be reporting to the Creative Director and Marketing team based between our offices in Guatemala and Brooklyn, NY.

Start dates flexible, looking for fall interns.The position is unpaid, however, academic credit is available if intern is a current student.

Responsibilities

  • Keeping track of PR Calendar and upcoming press pitches
  • Creating and sending pitches
  • Keeping track of all press credits, as well as sample and high-res image requests
  • Helping out with event planning
  • Targeting celebrity outreach techniques

Requirements

  • Studying or graduated with a degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or Public Relations
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office functions
  • Familiarity with Social Media and Bloggers
  • Strong communication and writing skills

Photography Intern in Guatemala

Location: Panajachel, Guatemala

Classification: Part time or Full-time

Job Overview

Mercado Global seeks a Photography Intern to provide content across digital marketing platforms, following art direction of brand style guide. Photography shotlist needs will be set by Graphic Designer and Marketing Associate.

Role Responsibilities

  • Photography and post-edits within aesthetic of brand style guide, supporting the brand’s key messages and visual consistency.
  • Photography of product lifestyle shots, handmade process, artisan communities, and trainings
  • Support Graphic Designer on e-commerce and e-newsletters
  • Photo content for social media following plan established by Marketing Associate

Qualifications

  • A passion for Mercado Global’s mission
  • Professionalism and maturity, as shown through academics, extracurricular activities, and job history
  • Advanced training and experience in photography, particularly using natural light
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite: Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign
  • Basic videography and motion graphic skills, or willingness to actively learn
  • Strong eye for composition and ability to deliver content within brand style
  • Exceptional attention to detail and proven ability to meet due dates
  • Compassion, social awareness and communication skills to work well with teams and across cultures
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus
  • International experience a plus

Operations Intern

Classification: Full‐time Location: Brooklyn, NY or Panajachel, Guatemala Time Commitment: 3-6 months, semester, yearlong

Position Overview

As part of its mission to foster a sense of global responsibility among the next generation of leaders and consumers, Mercado Global accepts a limited number of students as interns out of our New York and Guatemala offices. The internship offers the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of a non-profit organization while becoming familiar with the growing ethical fashion industry.

The Operations Internship is based out of MG's office in Brooklyn or Panajachel Guatemala and will report to the Operations Manager. The intern must commit to working for a minimum of 3 months. Start dates flexible. Unpaid but academic credit is available if intern is a current student.

Key Responsibilities

The CDI in Curriculum Development is an office-based position with 1-3 weekly visits to artisan communities. Due to the nature of the internship, it is requested that the intern have Intermediate to Advanced Spanish speaking abilities.

Specific Responsibilities Include

The Operations Intern will assist the Operations Manager in:

  • Fulfillment and shipping of orders
  • Coordination of imports/exports and providing order and packaging instructions to our Guatemala production team
  • Assist at trade shows and other Mercado Global events in the NYC area
  • Maintaining inventory records, assisting with trunk show logistics, mailings, and other operations projects
  • Communication between the Operations Manager in New York and Guatemala

Requirements

  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills required
  • Ability to work independently and troubleshoot
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite programs
  • Experience and/or knowledge of fashion industry or marketing a plus
  • Spanish proficiency required for Guatemala position
  • Customer-facing experience preferred
  • Must have college degree or currently be working towards a degree

Sales and Marketing Internship

Location: Brooklyn, New York City

Position Overview

Mercado Global is seeking a highly motivated Sales & Marketing intern who is eager to expand their breadth of knowledge within both the social enterprise and fashion industries. This is a unique opportunity for current and recent college graduates to gain skills and knowledge in supporting the day- to-day operations of a sales team, and assist in expanding our quickly growing client base. The Sales & Marketing Intern works on a variety of sales projects. He or she helps with development of promotional materials and communication for clients, maintaining our e-commerce site, outreach to specialty retailers, and development of text and collateral to tell the stories behind our products and of the women who craft them. This position can be completed from our New York or Guatemala offices or remotely. Please indicate your preferred location in your application.

This position requires a minimum commitment of 3 months and can be either full/part time. There are positions open in both Panajachel, Guatemala, and Brooklyn, New York. Currently looking for interns from May. Start dates flexible. Unpaid but academic credit is available if intern is a current student.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in development of sales tools, including linesheets, e-pitches, product & collection descriptions, and other collateral
  • Assist with data management
  • Assist in outreach to specialty stores and boutiques
  • Update contact information for target clients and specialty stores
  • Assist with organizing trunk shows & sample sales
  • Assist with setting up meetings with boutiques
  • Following up with boutiques in collecting payment/shipping information
  • Assist in setting up meetings with Department/Specialty Stores

Key Requirements

  • Experience in sales highly preferred-Self-motivated and highly organized
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Polished and professional demeanor
  • Proficient in MS Office, including Word and Excel
  • Strong database management skills.
  • Experience with Salesforce is a plus
  • Knowledge of Photoshop or Illustrator is a plus, but not required

Translation Internship

Classification: Full‐time Location: Panajachel, Guatemala

Position Overview

Reporting to the Institutional Partnerships Coordinator, the Translation Intern will be based in our office in Panajachel, Guatemala. The Translation Intern will gain valuable experience in translation, as well as broad exposure to both the social enterprise and fashion industries. This position requires at least a 3-month commitment, though we are seeking an intern to stay for the semester. Start date will be in June or July 2017 (dates are flexible). Unpaid but academic credit is available if intern is a current student.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Convert concepts in Spanish to equivalent concepts in English and vice-versa, both verbally and in writing, correctly relaying the style and tone of the original language
  • Assist with the creation of presentations and events in Spanish
  • Compile information, such as technical terms used in the fashion industry, to be used in translations -Check translations of technical terms and terminology to ensure that they are accurate and remain consistent throughout translation revisions
  • Perform other related duties as required

  • Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively in both English and Spanish

Marketing and Graphics Intern

Classification: Part‐time or Full-time

Location: Remote, Brooklyn, NY or Panajachel, Guatemala

Position Overview

Reporting to and working predominantly with the Graphic Designer and Photography Associate, the Marketing and Graphics Intern will support in the development of sales and marketing material for key accounts such as J Crew, Calypso St Barth, and Anthropologie. The Marketing Intern will also assist in the development of fundraising and press material, as well as contribute ideas/design brand specific content to develop social media strategies across the organization. This internship provides current and recent college graduates with the opportunity to develop key skills and experience in the fashion world while also directly helping artisans in Guatemala develop income opportunities. This position involves collaborative work with our experienced production and design team, our Guatemala and U.S. based staff, and the talented women artisans we serve in Guatemala.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Support the Graphic Designer and Photography Associate in maintaining brand aesthetic through design and graphics
  • Update website with new graphics, products and other content 
  • Assist in photography and photo editing 
  • Work with design team to create content for social media, newsletters and ecommerce

Key Requirements

  1. Studying or graduated with a degree in Marketing, Graphics, or Design is required 
  2. Excellent communication and copywriting skills
  3. Excellent organizational skills and extreme attention to detail 
  4. Highly proficient in Indesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
